Trudeau's 'progressive' trade agenda with China seen as arrogant, say critics

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a high-minded approach to trade in his recent four-day trip to China.
The Liberal government's commitment to progressive trade seeks to strike a bargain for the best of both worlds: access to lucrative markets like China while protecting women, the environment and labour laws among other things.
"If we move forward with simply straight, classic trade deals that focus on tariffs and barriers, then we are going to find ourselves in a world where protectionism and inward thinking is the only option," Trudeau said in China.
Critics point to Trudeau's so-called "progressive" trade agenda elements as a stumbling block in moving forward toward a deal.
"I'm a huge supporter of progressive views on gender equality, human rights, environmental protections and labour conditions, but despite the nice-sounding rhetoric, trade agreements are just not effective in pushing that agenda forward," says Martha Hall Findlay, CEO of the Canada West Foundation, a think-tank that looks at Western Canadian issues.
She says trade agreements turn potential trade partners away.
"We like to think of ourselves as being nice and the rest of the world likes us. But when it comes to these trade agreements ... we're coming across as being patronizing, we're coming across as arrogant and frankly, we're coming across as being naive," Hall Findlay tells The Current's Friday host Piya Chattopadhyay.
"The rest of the world is playing chess and we're coming with our checkers."
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, Dec. 5, that his country has high hopes for a trade agreement with China, but won't be rushing into negotiations that could affect their economies for generations to come. (Ng Han Guan/Associated Press)

Wenran Jiang, UBC's senior fellow at the Institute of Asian Research, agrees that Trudeau's approach is being perceived as smug and patronizing.
Jiang suggests he should have made it clear to China that Canada was not there to impose.
"Now, with the trip done, all his inner circle people, negotiating team, his company members, bureaucracy, and the general public should reflect on how we engage the emerging superpower that is in many ways ... a different political system, governance system."
Should Canada set aside its values to secure a trade deal?
Hall Findlay contends that Canada shouldn't refrain from questioning human rights issues in China, or signal that they agree with China in all matters, in order to secure a trade deal.
"We already trade with China," she says. "We haven't parked our values to engage in trade so far, so why would we all of a sudden feel as though we're parking our values by not insisting on a different change in order to enhance that trade?"
She says enhanced trade provides greater engagement which is a key component to trade — and that "greater engagement with the rest of the world has changed China dramatically," Navdeep Bains, the Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development was also part Canada's delegation to China. Before Bains left, he outlined the government's objectives stating that the top priority of the trip was "to move forward in a meaningful way to advance trade discussions between Canada and China."
Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains said his top priority is 'to move forward in a meaningful way to advance trade discussions between Canada and China.' (Sean Kilpatrick/Canadian Press)

It's an objective that  David Lametti, MP for LaSalle-Émard-Verdun and Parliamentary Secretary to Bains says takes time.
"These relationships need to be built over time. This was the second annual meeting between leaders. Already, that's a good step. And it's pushing our agenda forward of engagement."
The Current did request interviews with Minister of Foreign Affairs Chrystia Freeland and the Minister of International Trade François-Philippe Champagne. Neither was available.
This segment was produced by The Current's John Chipman and Willow Smith.

Liberal arrogance out of control
Lorrie Goldstein
Published: September 30, 2017
Updated: October 1, 2017
Even for a government filled with politicians who assume they are Canada’s natural governing party, the arrogance of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and the Liberals is out of control.
No one questions their right to govern. They have a majority.
But their increasing attempts to demonize and delegitimize not just their political opponents, but even opposing points of view, is an affront to democracy.
In recent days, Liberals walked out of Parliament’s status of women committee because they refused to recognize its new, duly constituted chair, Conservative MP Rachael Harder, solely because they disagree with her views on abortion. Not only is this anti-democratic — Harder answers to the voters of Lethbridge, Alberta, not the Liberal caucus — Trudeau shamefully endorsed what they had done.
Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, called on Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer not just to rebuke Conservative Senator Lynn Beyak — which is fair comment — but to throw her out of the Conservative caucus, for expressing her view that residential schools did good as well as harm. Bennett wants Beyak declared a political leper, literally, for thought crime.
Liberals on another parliamentary committee considering their M-103 “Islamophobia” motion insulted and attacked my Sun Media colleague, Tarek Fatah, who appeared as a witness and who has devoted his life — often at the risk of death — to opposing Islamist tyranny and terrorism. Why? Because Fatah has criticized M-103.
This committee is chaired by Liberal MP Hedy Fry, who once falsely accused white people living in Prince George, B.C. of burning crosses on their lawns.
Even when the Liberals have a legitimate grievance — for example Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna justifiably calling out Tory MP Gerry Ritz for demeaningly referring to her as “Climate Barbie” in a tweet, the irony that McKenna describes Canadians who disagree with her about anthropogenic climate change as “climate deniers” — a phrase used by self-described “environmentalists” to compare them, outrageously, to Holocaust deniers is lost on them
The great Conservative thinker Thomas Sowell described the attitudes the Liberals are demonstrating in his 1995 book, The Vision of the Anointed, on the dangers of a “progressive” liberal ideology run amok.
“What a vision may offer, and what the prevailing vision of our time emphatically does offer, is a special state of grace for those who believe in it,” Sowell writes. “Those who accept this vision are deemed to be not merely factually correct, but morally on a different plane. Put differently, those who disagree with the prevailing vision are seen as not merely in error, but in sin.”
It is this arrogant and contemptuous attitude that Trudeau and the Liberals are increasingly displaying — not just that their political opponents are wrong, but that they are evil.
Mid-term polls should always be viewed with caution, but if there’s a canary in the coal mine for the Liberals, it’s found in two surveys released last week.
In the face of what until now have been unrelenting polls showing the Liberals well ahead of the Conservatives, Forum Research found the Tories now leading 39% to 35%, while an Angus Reid Institute poll found almost half of Canadians surveyed — 45% — say it’s time for a change in government, compared to 34% who disagree and 22% undecided.
Perhaps pride goes before a fall.

Commentary: Justin Trudeau, a fake Superman
By Charles Adler, Radio Host - Global News
Updated: September 26, 2017
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau speaks at a news conference in Ottawa on Tuesday Sept. 19, 2017. Sean Kilpatrick/CP
It’s fascinating to see how people react to a poll which shows Justin Trudeau’s Liberals are not a miracle of modern political science.
The assumption in conventional wisdom land is that the Prime Minister is such a political rock star that Joe and Jill Six Pack just feel fortunate every day that he is our leader.
There are too many reasons for this assumption to list here, and none of them matter because they are all based on charisma.
And charisma can go from all-powerful to irrelevant in minutes depending on issues and events.
Justin Trudeau’s popularity is all about Justin. He’s the non-politician, highly-likable guy who relates to ordinary people even though he comes from a background that is anything but ordinary.
WATCH: Justin Trudeau helps open up 2017 Invictus Games in Toronto
His biggest fans treat him like he was born on the planet Krypton and sent here to save us from all kinds of disasters and real and imagined.
But we’re coming up on the 2nd anniversary of Superman Justin’s election.
And the cartoon is becoming too tedious to watch even for some media people who were among the first to be impressed by his glow.
Some who were fans began to see a flaw when he charged across the House of Commons to the NDP section where he confronted one of his hecklers.
In the process he managed to elbow a female MP in the chest. The incident became known as ‘Elbowgate’.
The PM apologized for his actions, but left many of his admirers wondering if there was a screw loose.
WATCH: Analysis: Trudeau at the UN
The “real” Superman would never have done this.
In the first year of office, there was the pesky issue of political election reform. Trudeau had spent an entire campaign courting NDP voters telling them he was the most progressive person in Canada.
And if elected he would put a sword through an elections system which favours the big brand parties.
It’s called “first-past-the-post” and it allows them to win a riding simply by winning more votes than anyone else.
Since there are always more than two candidates running in a riding, the winner rarely gets anywhere near 50 per cent of the vote.
So when all the votes are totaled, a party that gets 40 per cent of the popular vote could end up with as much as 60 per cent of the seats.
That’s how it worked two Octobers ago for Justin Trudeau’s Liberals.
It wasn’t the first time this kind of political math was performed in the country.
WATCH: Justin Trudeau and Andrew Scheer square off over proposed changes
It’s a national tradition that even non-Supermen have performed.
It’s not magic. It’s just the the way it works in Britain and Canada and any other country with a multiparty system that operates first-past-the-post.
Justin Trudeau said the election would be the last one to use the system.
It was the key promise that NDP voters fell in love with. And it didn’t take Superman long to break their hearts.
Breaking promises is not good for Superman’s image.
Neither is an expensive secret vacay to a billionaire’s island in the Caribbean, or private fundraising dinners with billionaires or attacking Ma and Pa small businesses, including farms.
WATCH: Prime Minister Trudeau tries to pivot from tax plan to aerospace jobs
The list goes on. But the only point that needs to be made is the honeymoon is over.
This isn’t Superman or even Clark Kent.
This is a privileged human being pretending to be the savior of the middle class. And while he takes a great photo and clearly loves doing it over and over again, he is politically vulnerable.
Will he win the next election? I don’t know.
I just know he’s as vulnerable as any politician who has shown himself to be vain, arrogant and entitled.
Only a fake superman would routinely break promises made to the voters
Those who claim Trudeau cannot be beaten in October 2019 are the same ones who helped foster the myth of the Superman Justin.

Trudeau would rather have Quebecers than Albertans in charge
David Akin
November 22, 2012
OTTAWA
In the wake of Liberal MP David McGuinty’s anti-Alberta comments this week, a 2010 interview with Liberal leadership hopeful Justin Trudeau raises the issue about whether that attitude is baked into the DNA of the federal Liberal party In November 2010, Trudeau told a Quebec television show that he was tired of Albertans running the country and that, whether it was Jean Chretien or Brian Mulroney, Canada is better off when Quebecers are running the country.
"Canada isn’t doing well right now because it’s Albertans who control our community and socio-democratic agenda. It doesn’t work," Trudeau said in French to interviewer Patrick Lagace on the Tele-Quebec program Les francs-tireurs (The Straight Shooters).
Lagace then asked Trudeau if he thought Canada was "better served when there are more Quebecers in charge than Albertans?"
Trudeau replied: "I’m a Liberal, so of course I think so, yes. Certainly when we look at the great prime ministers of the 20th century, those that really stood the test of time, they were MPs from Quebec… This country – Canada – it belongs to us."
Trudeau specifically named prime ministers Pierre Trudeau, Chretien and Paul Martin but also included Progressive Conservative Mulroney on his list of great Quebec prime ministers of the last century.
Trudeau, who has been campaigning in Western Canada this week, did not respond to a request for an interview, but a statement from his campaign said the remarks were taken out of context.
“Justin knows that Calgary, Alberta and all of Western Canada are at the very heart of Canada’s future. That’s a message he has taken to every part of the country, from the beginning of the campaign. We need to get beyond the divisive politics of the Conservatives and include all Canadians," Trudeau spokesperson Kate Monfette said in an e-mailed statement.
“This is another reflection of the arrogance of the Liberal Party, its divisiveness,” Immigration Minister – and Alberta MP – Jason Kenney told reporters outside the House of Commons Thursday.
“It brings back for many Westerners the kind of arrogance of the National Energy Program which of course devastated the Western economy.”
Linda Duncan, the only NDP MP from Alberta, said it gives voters in her province another reason to reject the Liberals.
“I just find it unbelievable that an elected official could say that and have that kind of an attitude about our province,” Duncan said.
On Tuesday, McGuinty accused Conservative MPs from Alberta of "shilling" for the Alberta oil and gas industry.
"They are national legislators with a national responsibility," McGuinty told Sun Media in an interview Tuesday, "but they come across as very, very small-p provincial individuals who are jealously guarding one industrial sector … the oilsands business specifically, as one that they’re going to fight to the death for.
"They really should go back to Alberta and run either for municipal council in a city that’s deeply affected by the oilsands business or go run for the Alberta legislature."
On Wednesday, McGuinty apologized for his comments and resigned his position as the Liberal natural resources critic.

Joe Scarborough Defends Mika Against ‘Sleazebag’ Huckabee: ‘Predictably Stupid’
by Aidan McLaughlin
December 14th, 2017
MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough unleashed a brief tirade against Mike Huckabee on Thursday’s episode of Morning Joe, after the former governor fired shots at his fiancée Mika Brzezisnki for her strident criticism of his daughter Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
The family brawl all kicked off after Brzezisnki
repeatedly called on Sarah, the White House Press Secretary, to either call out her boss President Donald Trump for his suggestive tweet about Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand — or resign.
Sarah’s father Mike, appearing on Fox News,
slammed Brzezinski for her comments, hitting her for her “morality”:
“I was stunned that of all the people who are going to give a lecture on morality and family, and marriage, it’s going to be Mika? I’m sorry, but I just found that stunning,” Huckabee said. (It’s worth noting that Brzezinski’s gripe with Sarah Sanders did not have to do with family and marriage, but with her decision to defend the president’s tweet.)
“Mika can go pound sand somewhere as far as I’m concerned,” Mike added, in defense of his daughter.
On Morning Joe Thursday, Scarborough said after one commercial break that he had just seen Mike Huckabee’s interview.
“What a sleazy thing to do,” an angered Scarborough said, as Brzezinski protested. “You go and you actually talk about — Mika never talked about marriage.”
“She never lectured on the morality of any of that,” he exclaimed. “What a sleazy thing for you to do. What a judgmental, predictably stupid thing to do.”
“It’s unbelievable.”

Trump suggested the 2001 death of a Joe Scarborough aide is an ‘unsolved mystery.’ It isn’t.
By Lindsey Bever
November 29, 2017
(Left: a younger Joe Scarborough)
President Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to note the firing of Matt Lauer at NBC News — and, in the process, took aim at MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough over a death that occurred at Scarborough’s Florida office when he was a member of Congress.
Following Lauer’s firing over what NBC News described as “inappropriate sexual behavior,” Trump wondered when executives at the network and its corporate owner, Comcast, would be terminated for “putting out so much Fake News.”
Then he wrote: “And will they terminate low ratings Joe Scarborough based on the ‘unsolved mystery’ that took place in Florida years ago? Investigate!”
The president appeared to be referring to the 2001 death of Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old aide who worked for Scarborough at the time, when he represented Florida’s 1st congressional district.
But Klausutis’s death is not an unsolved mystery: Authorities determined 16 years ago that she died after losing consciousness from an abnormal heart rhythm and collapsed, striking her head. She was discovered in Scarborough’s office in Fort Walton Beach, lying on her back with her head near a desk, according to a 2001 police report. (listen to the above video - this article is bogus)
The circumstances of Klausutis’s death on July 20, 2001, have prompted conspiracy theories — some of which appear to persist. But no foul play was suspected, and her death was ultimately ruled an accident by the medical examiner.
After Trump’s insinuation that Scarborough had something to do with Klausutis’s death, the “Morning Joe” co-host refused to engage the president,
tweeting: “Looks like I picked a good day to stop responding to Trump’s bizarre tweets. He is not well.”
Scarborough, who joined MSNBC after his departure from Congress and is now a contributing opinion columnist at The Washington Post, could not immediately be reached for comment. (Since Scarborough is employed by The Washington Post, is there any chance this article is biased?)
An NBC spokesman declined to comment on Trump’s tweet about the MSNBC host, and the White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Trump once had a chummy relationship with “Morning Joe,” regularly calling in for lengthy interviews, referring to Scarborough and his co-host, Mika Brzezinski, as “supporters” and offering to officiate at their wedding.
But the hosts have become increasingly critical of Trump, and the president’s relationship with them has turned adversarial.
Now Scarborough regularly criticizes Trump in his opinion columns and on MSNBC.
In turn, the president has lashed out at the anchor, calling him “Psycho Joe,” slamming his “low rated show” and threatening to “tell the real story of @JoeNBC and his very insecure longtime girlfriend, @morningmika.”
In June, Trump viciously attacked Brzezinski, calling her “low I.Q. Crazy Mika” and claiming she “was bleeding badly from a facelift” when she and Scarborough came to Mar-a-Lago — the president’s private club in Palm Beach, Fla. — late last year.
From 1994 through 2001, Scarborough served as a Republican congressman.
Klausutis worked on his staff the last two years he was in office, according to the Tampa Bay Times; before her death, Scarborough had announced that he was leaving Congress.
The day before Klausutis was found dead in Scarborough’s Florida office, she had told a colleague she was not feeling well, according to a 2001 police report cited by the St. Petersburg Times, now known as the Tampa Bay Times.
As the newspaper reported in August 2001:
Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Berkland has said Klausutis, 28, of Niceville, lost consciousness because of an abnormal heart rhythm and fell, hitting her head on a desk. The head injury caused the death, Berkland said. The report, which was released Monday, quotes friends and relatives as saying Klausutis was happily married and was known as “Little Miss Mary Sunshine.”They said she was under moderate stress in the days before she died. She had two assignments due for college courses. She and her husband had recently moved into a new house, and she was looking for a new job because Scarborough recently resigned from Congress, effective in September.Relatives told police she was upbeat about a job possibility at a local radio station and had recently received a $6,000 raise.Relatives said she had been taking medication for acne and that she suffered a head injury in a traffic accident when she was a teenager that left her in a coma. When she recovered, she had signs of short-term memory loss.A mail carrier who came in the office on July 19 said she appeared nervous. He said Klausutis told him she did not feel well.
Less than three weeks later, on Aug. 6, 2001, a Fort Walton Beach Police report noted that the medical examiner had determined Klausutis died as a result of an acute subdural hematoma, or blood clot.
The report cited a letter from the medical examiner, stating that the injury was the result of trauma from a fall as she lost consciousness from “a probable cardiac arrhythmia secondary to valvular heart disease.”
The manner of death was ruled “accidental,” and police concluded that there was no reason to further investigate.
A copy of the medical examiner’s report was not immediately available on Wednesday, but a police investigator told The Washington Post that authorities had left “no stone unturned.”
Former journalist Bill Adair, who covered Klausutis’s death for the then-St. Petersburg Times in 2001, said Wednesday that the continuing conspiracy theories are a “tragedy.”
Adair said he had looked into the case, interviewing the police chief and the medical examiner who performed the autopsy.
“After doing that reporting, there was no question in my mind that this was an accidental death and that there was no foul play,” he said in a phone interview with The Post.
Adair, now a journalism professor at the Sanford School for Public Policy at Duke University and the founder of the Pulitzer Prize-winning website PolitiFact, added: “It was a tragedy then that it was the subject of conspiracy theories; it’s even more of a tragedy now that it’s still the subject of conspiracy theories because the authorities were clear — they did a thorough investigation. It’s terrible that people are still referring to this as a mystery. It’s not a mystery.”
Reached by phone in Florida, a relative of Klausutis declined to comment, saying he was not aware that the president had tweeted about her death.

What Really Happened to Lori Klausutis? (Everything Joe Scarborough Does NOT Want Viewers To Know)
By MeemaSue
Wednesday Dec 21, 2016
This past June a Media frenzy began when it was revealed that Morning Joe had been divorced since 2013 and Mika Brzezinski was quietly divorcing her husband James Hoffer. Rumors of their romance had been floating around for some time.  This was Joe’s second one having divorced his first wife, Melanie Hinton in 1999.
Most viewers of Morning  Joe’s show do not know he once served as a U.S. Congressman from Florida’s 1st District from 1995 until he suddenly resigned only 5 months into his 4th term in September 2001. His reason? The classic “In order to spend more time with his children”
Curiously, just 2 months before this occurred:
Naples Daily News July 21, 2001
"FORT WALTON BEACH, FL. - Lori Klausutis, a 28-year-old office worker for Rep. Joe Scarborough (R-Fl), was found dead in the congressman's district office. Police said preliminary findings from the medical examiner's office showed no foul play or any outward indication of suicide."
Why was there a virtual news blackout on this very mysterious death?
1. IOKIYAR (It’s OK If You Are Republican) Syndrome- A disease of Corporate Media where Republicans get free passes on issues and behaviors that destroy the careers of Democrats.
(See Gary Hart)
While Mainstream Media was hounding Democrat U.S. Congressman Gary Condit about his missing ex-intern, Chandra Levy, viewers heard next to nothing about Joe’s intern, a healthy 28 year old woman,  being found dead in his Congressional District Office in Fort Walton Beach, FL.
2. Only days later - September 11, 2001
Naturally worldwide focus shifted for weeks and months as Americans & the world tried to comprehend and cope with the horrific loss of life and catastrophic events of that day.
However, the Media’s relentless scrutiny and insinuations cost Condit his re-election in 2002, even though Levy’s murderer was later found and convicted while Morning Joe’s mysterious case vanished into thin air.
Why?
Begin with former Medical Examiner Dr. Michael Berkland whose autopsy results help bury Lori and all legitimate questions surrounding her death.
Who is Dr. Michael Berkland?
He was a Pathologist whose medical license in the state of Missouri had been revoked in 1998 as a result of Berkland reporting false information regarding brain tissue samples in a 1996 autopsy report. Berkland never denied the charges.
He moved to Florida in 1997 and in July 1999, Berkland was suspended from his position as Medical Examiner in the State of Florida.  Yet in 2001 he was issuing reports on Klausutis’s death that were questionable if not downright false.
Berkland continued to get into trouble and in 2003 not only was he fired but had his license as Medical Examiner withdrawn.
In 2012 he was arrested & charged when this gruesome discovery was made:
It is more than fair to question the competency and accuracy of any and all Dr. Berkland’s autopsy reports especially given the inconsistent reports of Lori’s health prior to her death. Joe himself said that Lori had a "complicated medical history" including "stroke and epilepsy," though this was absolutely not true.
To this day no one truly knows how and why a healthy 28 year old woman died in her boss’s office?
These THREE questions have never been adequately answered:
From American Politics Journal August 8, 2001
1. If Lori's death was just a simple accident, then why did Rep. Scarborough and his spokesman Miguel Serrano feel the need to go to two different local TV stations within three hours of her body's being found and invent a nonexistent history of chronic medical conditions for her - in other words - why did they feel the need to lie about Lori's health?
2. Would you trust without question the word of a Medical Examiner who lost his ME license in two separate states (Missouri and Florida) because he LIED about his autopsy work and results.
3. Why should whoever wrote Ms. Klausutis's obituary feel it was appropriate to mention nearly everything about her life -- EXCEPT where she'd been working since 1999, i.e with Congressman Scarborough?
Let’s add one more-
4. Dr. Berkland and his supervisor at the time, Dr. Gary Cumberland were known to be high-giving donors to Scarborough’s Congressional campaigns. Did their relationship with Scarborough influence any and all the results issued by the M.E.’s Office?
Lori Klausutis was a smart and loving young woman whose life ended way too soon. Doesn’t she deserve justice and doesn’t her family deserve to know ALL the facts surrounding her death?
No one knows if Morning Joe had anything to do with her death, but the manner in which authorities handled the press shows one thing.  Without all the facts they gave Morning Joe a FULL PARDON. It is doubtful they would do the same for an Ordinary Joe.
